The A Student’s Journey Program is actively addressing the academic transfer barriers for Tohono O’odham Community College (TOCC) students enrolling at 4-year universities. Our staff members and collaborating faculty from TOCC and the University of Arizona are creating equitable transfer pathways to 4-year universities with the lens of environmental health and environmental justice. Our goal is to change the landscape of higher education and workforce on the Tohono O’odham Nation by offering a 5-week on-campus experience at the University of Arizona that directly serves the needs for TOCC students. This includes two internship experiences, environmental health and justice curriculum, professional networking, and peer mentoring all rooted in O’odham culture. Envisioned outcomes include expanding our model of programming to more Tribal Colleges and Universities through partnerships within the Native FEWS Alliance.
